2009 EHOVE Concert, Sunday, April 19th
"At a Dixieland Jazz Funeral"

Milan & Medina – The Medina Community Band, under the baton of Marcus Neiman will usher in their 150th celebration summer season with two concerts in April. The first will be on Sunday, April 19th, at 2p, at EHOVE Career Center, 316 Mason Road, Milan (44846) and the second will be on Wednesday, April 22nd, at 7:30p, in the Middle Stage, of Medina High School, 777 East Union Street, Medina (44256). Both concerts have complimentary admission!  Ample parking is available at both sites.

Medina Community Band, founded in 1858, will present works by Offenbach, King, Court, Duble, Clarke, Delibes, Jezek, Shaffer, Mendelssohn, Pryor, Spears, Berlin, and Sousa. Featured soloists on both concerts will be: Marcia Nelson-Kline (trumpet) performing Douglas Court’s Rhapsody for Trumpet (commissioned by and dedicated to Medina Community Band); Amy Thach-McArtor (flute) and Mary Ann Grof-Neiman(clarinet) in James Curnow’s arrangement of LéDelibes Flower Song - Sous le dôme épais from his opera Lakmé; clarinetists Amy Dragga, Mary Ann Grof-Neiman, Catherine Palcza, and Vicki Smith in Jaroslav Ježek’s Bugatti Step; and, Edward Lichtenberg (clarinet), Marcia Nelson-Kline (trumpet), Lee Harper (trombone), Kyle Snyder (tuba), and Chuck Stiver (drum set) in Jared Spears At a Dixieland Jazz Funeral.

Featured marches will include: Carrollton (Karl L. King); Bravura (Charles Duble); David Shaffer’sWindward Passage (commissioned by and dedicated to Medina Community Band); War March of the Tartars (Karl L. King); That Flying Rag (Arthur Pryor); Sound Off!  and, The Stars and Stripes Forever (John Philip Sousa); and, God Bless America (Irving Berlin).

Featured major works will include: Jacques Offenbach’s Overture to The Drum Major’s Daughter and Felix Mendelssohn’s Fingal’s Cave Overture.

The 70-piece ensemble’s program will be narrated by Jan Snyder. Fans of the band are encouraged to visit the newly redesigned website (http://www.medinacommunityband.org) to learn more about the band and their 150th season.

Medina Community Band’s summer season, featuring music from its past, will perform on the Historic Medina Public Square Gazebo Friday evenings beginning Friday, June 5th and continuing on through Friday, July 31st, from 8:30p until approximately 9:30p, weather permitting. A special concert will be given by the band in Mercer, Pennsylvania on their town square band stand on Friday August 7th, 2009, at 7p.
